Memoriam: Remembering Paul Puchalik, a girls hockey champion,

Posted on 27-Jan-2010, Wednesday

All MAWHA players have been asked to attach to their helmets for the remainder of the season a sticker bearing the initials "PP," a memorial to Paul Puchalik, the first commissioner of the Mid-Atlantic Women's Hockey Association and a champion of girls in the male-dominated sport of ice hockey. Paul died in November after a battle with cancer. He was 65. As MAWHA commissioner, Paul was knowledgeable of the hockey landscape, a tough but fair administrator, and an active supporter of recruiting more girls into the sport. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He was employed by the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey as its ice rink manager. He also served as vice-president of the Atlantic youth hockey league.

All team managers will be receiving the stickers and parents and players are asked to carefully place them on the backs of each player's helmet for the remainder of the season and through MAWHA playoffs in March.
