Skate with the University of Maryland's TerpsPosted on 14-Nov-2011, Monday viewIt's that time of year again! Last year UMD held their second Skate with the Terps Women's Youth Hockey Clinic and it was a blast! This year they are holding the clinic a little bit earlier. The clinic is scheduled for December 4, 2011 at 12:35 pm at The Garden's Ice House in Laurel, MD. The clinic will include some skill building and conditioning Coach Aaron House and Coach Patrick Green alongside all the Terps, and a little scrimmaging to finish it all up. Afterwards they will be providing refreshments (mmm pizza) for all the hungry hockey players at a meet-and-greet with the players and all of our coaches. Two new assistant coaches this year, who have been working with the team, will be assisting with the clinic as well.
Emily Paquin has been playing hockey since she was 10, going on to play for the national tier 1 teams of the Montgomery Blue Devils and to place 3rd at Nationals in 2007 with the Washington Pride. Emily went on to captain both the St John's College High School boy's team and the women's team at St. Michael's College in Vermont. She played Division 2 at St. Michael's, graduating with 100 games under her belt and on the all time goals, points, and assists lists.
Erin McAuliffe, 23, grew up in Delaware and has been playing hockey for 14 years. She went to college at the University of Delaware (one of our rivals!) where she played forward. She currently is using her talents to help out the Terps and plays on a local competitive women's team.
Erin and Emily are wonderful additions to our coaching staff, and we would love for you to come meet them!
They will be able to answer any questions you have about college hockey. You get a great hockey experience with friends and food. They are asking again that everyone sign a waiver before stepping on the ice. If you are over 18, you may sign your own waiver. However, if you are planning on skating and you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the waiver (coaches, if you are bringing players, you cannot sign the waiver for them, please request a waiver be emailed to you so their parents can print them out and sign them beforehand).
Remember that this event is offered for FREE! There will be t-shirts available for a $15 donation to commemorate the event.
Please, let us know ASAP if you would like to participate in our Third Annual Skate with the Terps Women's Youth Hockey Clinic so we can prepare! Spaces are limited!!
Please e-mail CJDurand06@gmail.com to reserve your spot or if you have any questions. Download the event flyer

USA Hockey will provide Concussion InformationPosted on 12-Oct-2011, Wednesday view
The concept of developing cerebral traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from just a few incidents of head trauma
(as seen from the work of Dr. Anne McKee at Boston University) is a concern for parents, players, and coaches.
Some doctors have questioned whether or not children should be allowed to play contact-collision sports before the age of 14.
(Check out the recent recommendations of concussion expert Dr. Robert Cantu from Boston.)
Girls and women are not immune from concussions.
In fact, females have a greater incidence of concussions than males in both ice hockey and soccer.
Over forty states have passed legislation mandating documented training
in recognizing concussions and concussion management for coaches, parents, players, and administrators.
For the most part, this legislation involves interscholastic sports in public schools and middle schools.
However, some states have included youth sports in this legislative mandate.
THIS CONCUSSION TRAINING (IN MOST STATES) IS REQUIRED ANNUALLY!!
USA Hockey would like to get everyone involved in concussion education.
We want to have educated board members, staff members, committee members, and officers and committees of our affiliates,
and then we want to educate every hockey parent, every player, every coach, and every administrator.
Get educated!
Some of you may have already attended a head trauma seminar, or taken a concussion on-line course, and that's great.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the National Federation of High Schools
has an on-line course in concussion recognition and concussion management. Visit WWW.nfhslearn.com or view USA Hockey's Concussive Materials for more information.
It takes about 25 minutes, asks you some questions,
and then provides you with a certificate (suitable for framing) that you've taken the course.
There is no charge for this on-line training.
It also puts you name on a list (by state) that you've taken the on-line course.

But as you know, unless we can mark the occassion in some way there will be liitle to no effect felt. So we are asking that member organizations to have a time designated that would be used to mark the occassion. Almost any idea you can conceive will work, such as;
A game slot designated for girls to play or practice can be used as the backdrop for marking the occassion.
You can build an event around this time when girl players will be at the rink.

information from clothing. ? He claimed he was an equipment supplier agent,
which was a ruse to get information from players. Police were summoned; the
man was questioned, photographed and escorted out of the facility.
It is imperative that all local programs have an adult (coach, assistant
coach, team manager) present in the locker room, or at the locker room door,
to assure that only players, coaches and approved team personnel are
permitted in the locker room.
Further, coaches/team managers must personally monitor the locker room
environment at all times while players are present and also make sure the
locker room is appropriately secured during times when players are on the
ice.

Memoriam: Remembering Paul Puchalik, a girls hockey champion,Posted on 27-Jan-2010, Wednesday viewAll MAWHA players have been asked to attach to their helmets for the remainder of the season a sticker bearing the initials "PP," a memorial to Paul Puchalik, the first commissioner of the Mid-Atlantic Women's Hockey Association and a champion of girls in the male-dominated sport of ice hockey.
Paul died in November after a battle with cancer. He was 65.
As MAWHA commissioner, Paul was knowledgeable of the hockey landscape, a tough but fair administrator, and an active supporter of recruiting more girls into the sport. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He was employed by the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey as its ice rink manager. He also served as vice-president of the Atlantic youth hockey league.
All team managers will be receiving the stickers and parents and players are asked to carefully place them on the backs of each player's helmet for the remainder of the season and through MAWHA playoffs in March. First MAWHA U10 Jamborees Held at YorkPosted on 07-Dec-2009, Monday viewThe future of MAWHA hockey looks good, based on games played at the first two 10-and-under jamborees in October and December at York, Pa. Teams from the Quakers, New Jersey Colonials, Princeton Tiger Lilies and Susquehanna Rapids competed in a series of games over two days on the weekends of Oct. 17-18 and Dec. 5-6. The format was officiated running-clock games of varying lengths, with each team playing six games. The teams had full benches, with newbies playing alongside and against girls of diverse skills and experience. The emphasis was on team play and fun, and the coaches of all teams were impressed with the amount of passing the girls displayed in both jamborees. The Rapids hosted the events and now invite sister teams to consider entering U10/11 brackets in the upcoming January and March Pony Tail Tournaments, also at the York City Ice Rink. MAWHA's Commissioner, Paul PuchalikPosted on 19-Nov-2009, Thursday viewIt is with deep regret MAWHA's Board of Directors passes along the very sad news that our Commissioner, Paul Puchalik lost his battle with cancer early this morning (Nov 19th, 2009). We are deeply saddened and will miss Paul tremendously. Paul was part of the girls/women's pilot project which resulted in the formation of MAWHA. He was a willing volunteer from the boys side of hockey to reach across and become involved with our female athletes, coaches, and officials. He had all of you in his thoughts right up until the very end, worrying about what he needed to take care of and completing any open hockey issues associated with MAWHA.
For those of you who spent time at the Lawrenceville rink, Paul always greeted everyone with a smile, went out of his way to accommodate every one's needs, ran the Atlantic District Select Development Camp in the summer, and was one of the most dedicated, passionate, administrative hockey persons in the Atlantic District. He truly cared about the players, they were always his top priority.
Please keep Paul's family in your thoughts and prayers. Change to Rule 403 & 405 for 2009 SeasonPosted on 05-Oct-2009, Monday viewThe 2009 rule change to Rule 403 & 405 and its interpretation will apply only to situations where players receive a Match penalty or a Major penalty and a Game Misconduct (or are injured). If a player receives a Major plus Game Misconduct for checking from behind, (s)he is removed from the game and her/his team may wait to put a substitute player in the penalty box. The substitute may enter the box at any stoppage during the Major penalty.
The substitute player may only enter the box by way of the ice and only during a stoppage. Any substitution made outside these guidelines shall be penalized for Illegal Substitution.
If the team does not place a substitute player in the penalty box by the expiration of the Major penalty they must continue to play short-handed until the next stoppage of play. Once play has been stopped, they may place five players on the ice for the ensuing faceoff (there is NO additional penalty given at this point). If they send a player onto the ice before the next stoppage, they shall be penalized for Illegal Substitution. At this time, the icing rule is in effect even though they are still shorthanded.
This rule does not apply to any goalkeeper penalties, penalty situations that include Minor penalties (2+5+GM), or penalty situations that include Major plus Misconducts (5+10). In these situations, player substitutions must be made immediately.

Attention: Master Schedulers/ManagersPosted on 25-Sep-2009, Friday viewWe had promised you that by the middle of September, we would have implemented the 'Scorekeeper' system currently used by Atlantic Youth Hockey League.
As often happens in systems implementations, it has taken longer than expected to convert
the product from AYHL's format to the NJYHL & MAWHA formats. We expect the MAWHA version of Scorekeeper will be implemented within the next three weeks.
In the meantime, as a temporary measure, we have created a simple Game Admin tool to enter your home game schedules and a Team Admin tool to enter your rosters. To save you time and effort, the preliminary rosters sent to Pete Rothman were loaded into the MAWHA database.
We ask that you review these rosters and add/delete/edit as necessary to create your final team roster.
We will be sending further instructions over the next week or two on how we will accept completed game sheets and final registrar-approved USA hockey rosters.
Until directed otherwise, simply hold onto them.
Thanks for your patience.
