The AAHA is committed to developing female hockey players at all levels of the game. As a part of that commitment the AAHA hosts the annual player development camp each summer for players who attend and are selected from the AAHA Select Camp Try-out in the spring.

The try-out and camp are managed by the AAHA Female Player Development Director, Shelley Looney, and utilizes a staff of current NCAA coaches to select the top try-out performers from across the district. Players who are honored with selection to the development camp roster move on to attend the AAHA Select Development Camp.

Skate with the University of Maryland's Terps

Posted on 14-Nov-2011, Monday

moreArrowview

It's that time of year again! Last year UMD held their second Skate with the Terps Women's Youth Hockey Clinic and it was a blast! This year they are holding the clinic a little bit earlier. The clinic is scheduled for December 4, 2011 at 12:35 pm at The Garden's Ice House in Laurel, MD. The clinic will include some skill building and conditioning Coach Aaron House and Coach Patrick Green alongside all the Terps, and a little scrimmaging to finish it all up. Afterwards they will be providing refreshments (mmm pizza) for all the hungry hockey players at a meet-and-greet with the players and all of our coaches.

Two new assistant coaches this year, who have been working with the team, will be assisting with the clinic as well. Emily Paquin has been playing hockey since she was 10, going on to play for the national tier 1 teams of the Montgomery Blue Devils and to place 3rd at Nationals in 2007 with the Washington Pride. Emily went on to captain both the St John's College High School boy's team and the women's team at St. Michael's College in Vermont. She played Division 2 at St. Michael's, graduating with 100 games under her belt and on the all time goals, points, and assists lists. Erin McAuliffe, 23, grew up in Delaware and has been playing hockey for 14 years. She went to college at the University of Delaware (one of our rivals!) where she played forward. She currently is using her talents to help out the Terps and plays on a local competitive women's team. Erin and Emily are wonderful additions to our coaching staff, and we would love for you to come meet them!

They will be able to answer any questions you have about college hockey. You get a great hockey experience with friends and food. They are asking again that everyone sign a waiver before stepping on the ice. If you are over 18, you may sign your own waiver. However, if you are planning on skating and you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the waiver (coaches, if you are bringing players, you cannot sign the waiver for them, please request a waiver be emailed to you so their parents can print them out and sign them beforehand).

Remember that this event is offered for FREE! There will be t-shirts available for a $15 donation to commemorate the event. Please, let us know ASAP if you would like to participate in our Third Annual Skate with the Terps Women's Youth Hockey Clinic so we can prepare! Spaces are limited!! Please e-mail CJDurand06@gmail.com to reserve your spot or if you have any questions. Download the event flyer here

Concussion Information

Posted on 12-Oct-2011, Wednesday

moreArrowview

USA Hockey LogoConcussions in sports are a very, very hot topic. There has been more published in the medical journals about concussions, return to play following head trauma, and concussion management in the last decade than in the previous eighty years by a factor of ten. We are learning a lot.

The concept of developing cerebral traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from just a few incidents of head trauma (as seen from the work of Dr. Anne McKee at Boston University) is a concern for parents, players, and coaches. Some doctors have questioned whether or not children should be allowed to play contact-collision sports before the age of 14. (Check out the recent recommendations of concussion expert Dr. Robert Cantu from Boston.)

Girls and women are not immune from concussions. In fact, females have a greater incidence of concussions than males in both ice hockey and soccer.

Over forty states have passed legislation mandating documented training in recognizing concussions and concussion management for coaches, parents, players, and administrators. For the most part, this legislation involves interscholastic sports in public schools and middle schools. However, some states have included youth sports in this legislative mandate. THIS CONCUSSION TRAINING (IN MOST STATES) IS REQUIRED ANNUALLY!!

USA Hockey would like to get everyone involved in concussion education. We want to have educated board members, staff members, committee members, and officers and committees of our affiliates, and then we want to educate every hockey parent, every player, every coach, and every administrator.

Get educated! Some of you may have already attended a head trauma seminar, or taken a concussion on-line course, and that's great. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the National Federation of High Schools has an on-line course in concussion recognition and concussion management. Visit WWW.nfhslearn.com or view USA Hockey's Concussive Materials for more information. It takes about 25 minutes, asks you some questions, and then provides you with a certificate (suitable for framing) that you've taken the course. There is no charge for this on-line training. It also puts you name on a list (by state) that you've taken the on-line course.

CELEBRATE WORLD WOMEN'S HOCKEY DAY, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2ND, 2011

moreArrowview

There will be a worldwide recognition of girls and womens hockey on October 2nd. But as you know, unless we can mark the occassion in some way there will be liitle to no effect felt. So we are asking that member organizations to have a time designated that would be used to mark the occassion. Almost any idea you can conceive will work, such as; A game slot designated for girls to play or practice can be used as the backdrop for marking the occassion. You can build an event around this time when girl players will be at the rink.

  • An information table to raise awareness.
  • Snack give-a-way, (or lunch for club members and invited guests, family, girls new to the sport and those not involved who attend).
  • Information on girls/womens hockey and World Womens Hockey Day, (USAH will provide information we can use to advertise and hand out day of the events).
  • Even just a lunch for your club members to get together and recognize the event.
  • Community service work as a group or team.
  • Fund raising events like skate-a thon sponsorships for charities choosen by teams / clubs.
It would be outstanding if a majority of our league member programs did something in an organized fashion to mark the occassion and grow this event annually. Any or all of these are ideas anyone can use to mark the occassion, recognize girls/women's hockey and raise community awareness. Please join us and use this occassion to help grow our sport. Please let us know in advance what we can do to help make your event successful. Participating clubs, please notify Don Gould, by September 20th. MAWHA and the AAHA / USAH Girls and Women's Section support this event as a means of creating awareness and celebrating our sport. Thank you in advance for your support of all our girls. Please reach out if you need help in getting started and we will do what we can to help coordinate an event.

Coaches: Message from Mike Lichtenberger,AAHA Coach-in-Chief

We have now posted the coaches clinics on the USA Hockey website for September. Listed below are the remaining dates…and these too will be online shortly…and reminder that coaches may walk-up to any level 1-2-3 classroom clinic and register on site. A coach has until 12/31 of any given year to become current in his or her certification. Of course, a coach is eligible to be on the ice and on the bench before that time……nothing here has changed … as many classroom clinics are offered after the start of the season. We revamped the entire coaching program and had delayed listing classroom clinics on the website until now….Reminder too that a coach must also take an online age-specific module [web based training] that is appropriate to the age level of play….This too must be completed by 12/31 to remain current. These modules will be listed on USA Hockey’s website by September 1 … and a coach may take this online segment BEFORE attending the classroom clinic so there is no need to wait…. If any of the organizations have other questions, they may reach out AAHA Coach-in-Chief, Mike Lichtenberger at mikelichtenberger@iib.ws ….He is here to assist and clarify the new rule changes affecting coaching education.

Skate With The Terps - 1/23/2011

    Posted on 11-Jan-2011, Tuesday

    moreArrowview

Hey Friends of the Terps (and soon to be friends of the Terps!),

It's that time of year again! Last year we held our first ever Skate with the Terps Women's Youth Hockey Clinic, and even though it was last minute, it was a blast! This year we are holding the clinic a little bit earlier. The clinic is scheduled for January 23, 2011 at 12:30 pm at The Garden's Ice House in Laurel, MD (on the Patrick rink). The clinic will include some skill building and conditioning with Coach Aaron House and Coach Patrick Green alongside all the Terps, with a little scrimmaging to finish it all up. Afterwards we will be providing refreshments for all of our hungry hockey players!

We all had so much fun last year and we would love it if you would invite all of your players to participate in this event! We will be able to answer any questions you have about college hockey. Last year, we had acquired extra ice and were able to offer this event for free, but this year we will be charging a $15.00 fee. Along with this small fee, you get a great hockey experience with friends, food, and a super awesome T-Shirt! (really, it's super awesome). We also are asking again that everyone sign a waiver before stepping on the ice. If you are over 18, you may sign your own waiver. However, if you are planning on skating and you are under 18, a parent or guardian must sign the waiver (coaches, if you are bringing players, you cannot sign the waiver for them, please request a waiver be emailed to you so their parents can print them out an sign them beforehand).

Please, let us know ASAP if you would like to participate in our Second Annual Skate with the Terps Women's Youth Hockey Clinic so we can prepare! Spaces are limited!!

    Thank you very much!

    10-and-under Girls Jamborees

    Posted on 02-Jun-2010, Wednesday

    moreArrowview

The Mid-Atlantic Women's Hockey Association Hockey will host two 10-and-under girls jamborees during the upcoming hockey season -- on Saturday evening, Oct. 23, 2010, and on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, as part of the region's observation of Hockey Weekend Across America. Ten-and-under girls from throughout the Mid-Atlantic are invited to participate, even if they are not rostered on an all-girls team for the 2010-2011 season. MAWHA is currently seeking a host organization and rink for each event.

In the spirit of promoting girls ice hockey, we ask for the cooperation of all Atlantic and Southeastern district member clubs (CBHL, DVHL, NJYHL), either in organizing a team, working with another club to establish a team, and arranging your Mites and Squirts teams schedules around these relatively brief events so that girls may participate without conflicts.

    • In the spirit of the American Development Model, the jamborees are designed to be fun, busy events that take place within the frame of half a hockey day, usually a Saturday afternoon/evening, to open the door to girls hockey for new players and to broaden the hockey experience of girls already in the sport.
    • Girls born in 2000 or later, and who play on youth travel or recreational Mites and Squirts teams, should be encouraged to participate, along with any girls who play in house leagues or in rink-sponsored hockey basics classes.
    • MAWHA member clubs, or clubs in the DVHL, NJYHL and CBHL, who have some but not enough players for a minimum roster of 10 skaters plus a goalie, should contact other clubs to collaborate on a 10-and-under team. The name of the team and the uniform is far less important than forming the teams and getting more girls to play.
    • Dan Rodricks, MAWHA’s Blue Division representative (443-600-6719), will serve as jamboree coordinator and help any club form a team and ensure that any age-eligible girl who wants to participate in the jamboree has a team on which to play.
    • If possible, other MAWHA girls’ games should be scheduled at the same arena where the jamboree takes place, during, before or after the jamboree.
    • The jamborees can be full-ice or cross-ice games.
    • The jamboree coordinator, working with the participating clubs, will seed the jamboree so that teams of new and developing players and teams of more experienced U10 players have appropriate match-ups.
    • The jamboree coordinator requests proposals from clubs/rinks for the hosting of the events.
All girls rostered on Mites and Squirts teams in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina are eligible to participate in the All-Girls Under-10 Jamborees on Oct, 24, 2010 and on the Saturday of Hockey Weekend Across America 2011. Girls who play on youth teams (coed, travel or recreational) are eligible. We will assign you to a team so you can meet other girls who play hockey and have some great hockey fun in our half-day jamboree.

The fee for players not already rostered on U10 teams is $15 per jamboree.

Send check, payable to MAWHA, and player application to:
    Dan Rodricks, U10 jamboree
    6205 Pinehurst Road
    Baltimore, Md. 21212

To all USA Hockey Local Programs

    Posted on 24-Apr-2010, Saturday

This is to alert you of a security issue regarding locker room activity involving youth hockey players which happened recently.

A man in his 60's was able to enter locker rooms when players were changing and showering. He asked them questions and attempted to collect contact information. In addition, it appears this man entered other locker rooms while the players were on the ice and may have taken identification information from clothing. ? All MAWHA players have been asked to attach to their helmets for the remainder of the season a sticker bearing the initials "PP," a memorial to Paul Puchalik, the first commissioner of the Mid-Atlantic Women's Hockey Association and a champion of girls in the male-dominated sport of ice hockey. Paul died in November after a battle with cancer. He was 65. As MAWHA commissioner, Paul was knowledgeable of the hockey landscape, a tough but fair administrator, and an active supporter of recruiting more girls into the sport. He was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He was employed by the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey as its ice rink manager. He also served as vice-president of the Atlantic youth hockey league.

All team managers will be receiving the stickers and parents and players are asked to carefully place them on the backs of each player's helmet for the remainder of the season and through MAWHA playoffs in March.

The future of MAWHA hockey looks good, based on games played at the first two 10-and-under jamborees in October and December at York, Pa. Teams from the Quakers, New Jersey Colonials, Princeton Tiger Lilies and Susquehanna Rapids competed in a series of games over two days on the weekends of Oct. 17-18 and Dec. 5-6. The format was officiated running-clock games of varying lengths, with each team playing six games. The teams had full benches, with newbies playing alongside and against girls of diverse skills and experience. The emphasis was on team play and fun, and the coaches of all teams were impressed with the amount of passing the girls displayed in both jamborees. The Rapids hosted the events and now invite sister teams to consider entering U10/11 brackets in the upcoming January and March Pony Tail Tournaments, also at the York City Ice Rink.

It is with deep regret MAWHA's Board of Directors passes along the very sad news that our Commissioner, Paul Puchalik lost his battle with cancer early this morning (Nov 19th, 2009). We are deeply saddened and will miss Paul tremendously. Paul was part of the girls/women's pilot project which resulted in the formation of MAWHA. He was a willing volunteer from the boys side of hockey to reach across and become involved with our female athletes, coaches, and officials. He had all of you in his thoughts right up until the very end, worrying about what he needed to take care of and completing any open hockey issues associated with MAWHA.

For those of you who spent time at the Lawrenceville rink, Paul always greeted everyone with a smile, went out of his way to accommodate every one's needs, ran the Atlantic District Select Development Camp in the summer, and was one of the most dedicated, passionate, administrative hockey persons in the Atlantic District. He truly cared about the players, they were always his top priority.

Please keep Paul's family in your thoughts and prayers.

    Change to Rule 403 & 405 for 2009 Season

    Posted on 05-Oct-2009, Monday

    moreArrowview

The 2009 rule change to Rule 403 & 405 and its interpretation will apply only to situations where players receive a Match penalty or a Major penalty and a Game Misconduct (or are injured). If a player receives a Major plus Game Misconduct for checking from behind, (s)he is removed from the game and her/his team may wait to put a substitute player in the penalty box. The substitute may enter the box at any stoppage during the Major penalty.

The substitute player may only enter the box by way of the ice and only during a stoppage. Any substitution made outside these guidelines shall be penalized for Illegal Substitution. If the team does not place a substitute player in the penalty box by the expiration of the Major penalty they must continue to play short-handed until the next stoppage of play. Once play has been stopped, they may place five players on the ice for the ensuing faceoff (there is NO additional penalty given at this point). If they send a player onto the ice before the next stoppage, they shall be penalized for Illegal Substitution. At this time, the icing rule is in effect even though they are still shorthanded.

This rule does not apply to any goalkeeper penalties, penalty situations that include Minor penalties (2+5+GM), or penalty situations that include Major plus Misconducts (5+10). In these situations, player substitutions must be made immediately.

We had promised you that by the middle of September, we would have implemented the 'Scorekeeper' system currently used by Atlantic Youth Hockey League. As often happens in systems implementations, it has taken longer than expected to convert the product from AYHL's format to the NJYHL & MAWHA formats. We expect the MAWHA version of Scorekeeper will be implemented within the next three weeks.

In the meantime, as a temporary measure, we have created a simple Game Admin tool to enter your home game schedules and a Team Admin tool to enter your rosters. To save you time and effort, the preliminary rosters sent to Pete Rothman were loaded into the MAWHA database. We ask that you review these rosters and add/delete/edit as necessary to create your final team roster.

We will be sending further instructions over the next week or two on how we will accept completed game sheets and final registrar-approved USA hockey rosters. Until directed otherwise, simply hold onto them.

No matter which side of the aisle fans come down on in the Title IX issue, no one can debate that the late Sen. Ted Kennedy had a huge impact on women's athletics and the overall sports scene in this country. Kennedy, who passed away late Tuesday night after a yearlong bout with brain cancer, is remembered as a key supporter of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which was designed in part to balance the amount of money spent on men's and women's sports. Even more significantly from his leadership role in the Senate, Kennedy led the fight throughout the years against efforts to overturn or water down the legislation. ....
